rouleau /rou·leau/ (roo-lo´) pl. rouleaux´   [Fr.] an abnormal group of red blood cells adhering together like a roll of coins.

Etymology: Fr, cylinder
an aggregation of red cells in a roll formation that may be caused by abnormal proteins, as in multiple myeloma or macroglobulinemia, but is most often a microscopic artifact. Compare hemagglutination. See also erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

rouleau
pl. rouleaux [Fr.] a roll of red blood cells resembling a pile of coins.

rouleau formation
occurs when there is increased fibrinogen concentration or other changes in plasma proteins. It will disappear when blood is diluted with saline.
