In addition to the previously mentioned tests, the occupational therapist assessed postrotary nystagmus (PRN) in these six children using the Southern California Post Rotary Nystagmus Test (Ayres, 1975).
The presence of a burst of rotary nystagmus, which is counterclockwise at the right side and clockwise at the left side in the Dix-Hallpike test and subsides within seconds, indicated a typical posterior semicircular canal BPPV.
The characteristics of BPPV on Dix-Hallpike testing are a latent period before the onset of nystagmus, a rotary nystagmus beating toward the under ear that lasts for less than 40 seconds, a reversal of nystagmus upon sitting up, and fatiguing of response on repeat testing.
