tooth abscess
Etymology: AS, toth + L, abscedere, to go away
a collection of pus on a tooth, usually close to the root and often the result of a localized infection. If untreated, the pressure of the abscess may destroy the alveolar bone and adjoining soft tissues. Also called dental abscess. See also periapical abscess.
