rhonchus [rong′kəs] pl. rhonchi Etymology: Gk, rhonchos, snore an abnormal sound heard on auscultation of an airway obstructed by thick secretions, muscular spasm, neoplasm, or external pressure. The continuous rumbling sound is more pronounced during expiration and characteristically clears on coughing, whereas gurgles do not. rhonchus [rong´kus] (pl. rhon´chi) (L.) a continuous sound consisting of a dry whistlelike noise with a lower pitch than that of a wheeze, produced in the throat or bronchial tube due to a partial obstruction.
rhonchus pl. rhonchi [L.] a rattling in the throat; also, a dry, coarse rale in the bronchial tubes, due to a partial obstruction. Suggests the presence of chronic inflammation accompanied by presence of small amounts of tenacious exudate.
