Rhododendron plant genus in the family Ericaceae; contains andromedotoxin which causes a syndrome of repeated swallowing, bloat, vomiting, abdominal pain and frequent defecation. The course is short and the outcome may be death from aspiration pneumonia or complete recovery. Called also azalea. The list of toxic plants includes R. albiflorum, R. arboreum, R. campanulatum, R. cinnabarinum, R. indicum, R. macrophyllum (R. californicum, California rose bay), R. maximum (great laurel), R. molle, R. occidentale (western azalea), R. ponticum (horticultural rhododendron). |
