Acquired dysfibrinogenemia is typically diagnosed by demonstrating (1) abnormal laboratory tests of hepatocellular or cholestatic function (ie, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, [gamma]-glutamyltransferase, direct bilirubin) and (2) normal thrombin time and/or reptilase time in family members.
Thrombin and reptilase times should be used to screen the very rare cases of dysfibrinogenemia associated with an increased risk of thrombosis.
This mutation is the most commonly reported cause of dysfibrinogenemia and, like other dysfibrinogenemias, is readily detected because of the associated prolonged thrombin and reptilase times [1-3].
