Etymology: L, re + im, in; Fr, bourse, purse
a method of payment, usually by a third-party payer, for medical treatment or hospital costs.

reimbursement [re″im-bers´ment]
a compensation or paying back; see also payment.
third party reimbursement third party payment.

reimbursement,
n payment made by a third party to a beneficiary or dental professional on behalf of the beneficiary toward repayment of expenses incurred for a service covered by the contractual arrangement.

According to the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, Medicare reimbursements per enrollee in Oregon totaled $6,122 in 2006, the latest year for which figures are available.
Reimbursements under an accountable plan are excluded from gross income of employees and are exempt from withholding and payroll taxes.
WHAT IT INCLUDES: Funds in the HRA are not treated as taxable income and reimbursements are tax-free.
