typoscope(tī′pō-skōp) [Gr. typos, type, + skopein, to examine]
A reading aid device for patients with amblyopia or cataract.
A reading shield made of black material in which there is a rectangular aperture allowing one or more lines of print to be seen. It reduces extraneous light reflected from the surface of the paper and assists in staying on the correct line (Fig. T21). It can be helpful for people with low vision who have, for example, media involvement. Recent models embody built-in lighting to provide even and controlled illumination. Syn. reading slit.
