When I was in the seventh grade my mother figured the way to protect her foliage was to get a dog, so she came home one day with a nondescript little rat terrier we named Skippy.
Small, sharp, intelligent, fast and shrewd are some of the adjectives you would like to associate with an American hairless terrier, which was incidentally born out of a cross breeding of a rat terrier in the late 1980s.
A longtime animal-welfare advocate and writer best known for her New Age memoirs, MacLaine has also written about the relationship between humans and animals in the novel Out on a Leash -- a book that views the world through the eyes and ears of Terry the rat terrier, an animal companion who is still with her.
