n the initial phase of transformation that food undergoes on its way to becoming qi. After entering the stomach, where it ‘rots and ripens,’ the spleen processes the food and makes food qi. This type of qi is not yet usable to the body. The middle burner then sends it to the chest and lungs to continue the process. Also called

qui of food.
