[pul′sāting] Etymology: L, pulsare, to beat; Gk, ex + ophthalmos, eye an eye disorder characterized by a bulging, pulsating eyeball, caused by an arteriovenous aneurysm involving the internal carotid artery and the cavernous sinus of the orbit. exophthalmos abnormal protrusion of the eye. congenital exophthalmos seen in brachycephalic breeds with shallow orbits; see also euryblepharon. inherited exophthalmos exophthalmos with strabismus is inherited in cattle. ophthalmoplegic exophthalmos inability to move the eye because of exophthalmos. pulsating exophthalmos due to an arteriovenous fistula of the orbit.
