prurigo /pru·ri·go/ (proo-ri´go) [L.] any of several itchy skin eruptions in which the characteristic lesion is dome-shaped with a small transient vesicle on top, followed by crusting or lichenification.prurig´inous prurigo mi´tis a mild type of prurigo that begins in childhood, is intensely pruritic, and is progressive. nodular prurigo a form of neurodermatitis, usually on the limbs of middle-aged women, marked by discrete, firm, rough-surfaced, dark brownish-gray, intensely itchy nodules. prurigo sim´plex papular urticaria.
prurigo [proo͡rī′gō] Etymology: L, an itch any of a group of chronic inflammatory conditions of the skin characterized by severe itching and multiple dome-shaped small papules capped by tiny vesicles. As a result of repeated scratching, crusting and lichenification may occur. Some causes of prurigo are allergies, drugs, endocrine abnormalities, malignancies, and parasites. Specific treatment depends on the cause. Symptomatic therapy is the same as for pruritus. A mild form of the disease is called prurigo mitis, a more severe form, prurigo agria or prurigo ferox. See also pruritus. pruriginous, adj. prurigo (prōō·rīˑ·gō), n a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin distinguished by the presence of several, itchy papules shaped like domes that are topped with small vesicles. Lichenification and crusting may develop as a result of repetitive scratching. A specific drug, allergy, malignancy, parasite, or endocrine abnormality may cause the inflammation.
