proxymetacaine hydrochloride 

A topical anaesthetic, commonly used in 0.5% solution. It has a greater potency than tetracaine hydrochloride (amethocaine hydrochloride) and causes less stinging and squeezing of the eyes when instilled. Syn. proparacaine hydrochloride.
