monofilament sutures

absorbable or non-absorbable monofilament suture material; slides more easily through tissues and induces less tissue reaction than braided suture materials; knots tied with monofilament are less secure
  • 10g monofilament 3-4-cm length of nylon monofilament calibrated to apply a skin surface force of 10g; used to identify presence/loss of protective pain sensation; loss of awareness of contact of tip of a 10g monofilament across the majority of plantar skin (e.g. heel, 1 + 4 + 5 metatarsophalangeal joints, hallux pulp) constitutes loss of protective pain sensation, with risk of neuropathic plantar ulceration (see neuraesthesiometer)
