promastigote /pro·mas·ti·gote/ (-mas´ti-got) the morphologic stage in the development of certain protozoa, characterized by a free anterior flagellum and resembling the typical adult form of Leptomonas.

The flagellate stage of a trypanosomatid protozoan, as that of any of the Leishmania parasites.

promastigote
one of the morphological stages in the development of certain protozoa, characterized by a free anterior flagellum and the kinetoplast and axoneme at the anterior end of the body. There is no undulating membrane. They are found in arthropods and plants.
