Cleveland Police were sending out 100 cards yesterday to the most prolific
offenders, in the hope of deterring them from committing crimes over the festive season.
Peter Watt, the NSPCC's director of child protection, said: "There's no doubt that Savile is one of the most, if not the most, prolific
sex offender that we at the NSPCC have ever come across.
The figures show the 367 prolific
offenders have been arrested 10,733 times (around 29 times each) and convicted 10,999 times.
The dedicated unit, called Gobaith - Welsh for "hope" - has been set up at Barry Police Station by the Safer Vale Partnership and is part of the Home Office's Prolific
and Priority Offender Scheme.
