The soluble precursor of collagen possibly formed by fibroblasts in the process of collagen synthesis.

procollagen
the precursor of collagen, synthesized in osteoblasts and fibroblasts and subsequently converted to form collagen by procollagen peptidase.

procollagen N-peptidase
one of the enzymes involved in the conversion of procollagen to collagen. There is inadequate activity of this enzyme in osteogenesis imperfecta, dermatosparaxis.
