in ecological terms the stage reached in an ecosystem when humans intervene to prevent the natural climax or balance in the ecosystem from developing, e.g. vaccination of a large part of a canine population against distemper achieves a different climax serologically than the natural climax achieved by allowing the disease to develop unrestrained.
