pregnenolone (preg·neˑ·n·lōn),

n a precursor to steroid hormones that is synthesized (endogenously) from cholesterol or (exogenously) from soybeans. Has been used in a host of conditions including Alzheimer's disease, menopausal complaints, Parkinson's disease, osteoporosis, fatigue, stress, memory loss, and other conditions. May interact with the use of supplemental steroid hormones.

Pain management clinics, for example, are increasingly using LC-MS/MS methods to quantify hormones such as pregnenolone, 17alpha-hydroxypregnenolone, and cortisone in patient serum.
Pregnenolone prevents THC, the main active principle in cannabis, from fully activating its brain receptor, the CB1 receptor, that when overstimulated by THC causes the intoxicating effects of cannabis.
The potent species-specific PXR ligands rifampicin (RIF) and pregnenolone l6[alpha]-carbonitrile (PCN) were used as the positive control for hPXR and mPXR, respectively.

Diosgenin is isolated from these plants and is converted in the lab to all of the human hormones: estradiol, estriol, estrone, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and pregnenolone.
It thus appears that this enzyme is involved in the synthesis of pregnenolone and progesterone in villous syncytiotrophoblast which seems to be the major site of steroid hormone synthesis in rhesus monkey.
These products may contain hormones including: estrone, estradiol, estriol, DHEA, progesterone, pregnenolone, and testosterone.
