precipitin /pre·cip·i·tin/ (-sip´it-in) an antibody to soluble antigen that specifically aggregates the macromolecular antigen in vivo or in vitro to give a visible precipitate.
pre·cip·i·tin (pr-sp-tn)
n.
An antibody that under suitable conditions combines with and causes a specific soluble antigen to precipitate.

Precipitin
An antibody in blood that combines with an antigen to form a solid that separates from the rest of the blood.

precipitin
[prəsip′itin]
Etymology: L, praecipitare + Gk, anti, against; AS, bodig, body; Gk, genein, to produce

precipitin [pre-sip´ĭ-tin]
an antibody to antigen that specifically aggregates the antigen in vivo or in vitro to give a visible precipitate.
precipitin reaction a reaction involving the specific serologic precipitation of an antigen in solution with its specific antiserum in the presence of electrolytes. The reaction is used in the typing of pneumococcus strains, in testing whether blood is human or animal, and for diagnostic purposes.
precipitin test any test in which the positive reaction consists of the formation and deposit of a precipitate in the fluid being tested. See also precipitin reaction.

precipitin
an antibody to soluble antigen that specifically aggregates the antigen in vivo or in vitro to give a visible precipitate.

precipitin curve
a plot showing the amount of antibody precipitated with increasing amounts of antigen added in a precipitin reaction.
precipitin reaction, precipitin test
a reaction involving the specific precipitation of an antigen in solution by mixing with a specific antiserum in the presence of electrolytes. See also lattice theory.
