a family of plants that includes the genus Solanum, or nightshades, with more than 1800 species, including deadly nightshade (belladonna), henbane, tomatoes, and potatoes.

It belongs to the potato family, Solanaceae and is part of a small Genus of plants called Lycium-Lycium barbarum specifically.
The potato family is also the family of deadly nightshade, which contributed to long-held beliefs that tomatoes were poisonous.
Other plants in the potato family (Solanaceae) are also blooming now.
