Of or occurring after birth, especially in the period immediately after birth.

postnatal [pōst-na´tal]
occurring after birth, with reference to the newborn.

postnatal
relates to the newborn in the period immediately after birth. A suitable subdivision is: early postnatal—within 48 hours of birth; delayed postnatal—2 to 7 days; late postnatal—1 to 4 weeks. See also perinatal, parturient disease.

diseases which are more prevalent at this time in the animal's life because of its small size, its immunological inadequacy and its dependence on the dam for nourishment, protection from predators and from inclement weather, especially protection from the cold.
