staphyloma
A bulging of the cornea or sclera due to injury, inflammation, glaucoma or pathological myopia, and containing adherent uveal tissue. Staphylomas can occur anywhere within the eye and they are then referred to as anterior, ciliary (a scleral staphyloma which is partly overlaid by prolapsed tissue of the ciliary body), or posterior staphyloma (most often associated with degenerative myopia). If only the cornea or sclera stretches without uveal tissue, the condition is called ectasia. See corneal ectasia.
anterior staphyloma A congenital disease characterized by an opacity of one or both corneas, which become protuberant, often with adherent iris tissue. It is possibly due to a faulty embryonic development or intrauterine inflammation. Syn. keractectasia (if there is no uveal lining).
