posterior (low) digital neurectomy
used for relief of incurable lameness in horses, usually resulting from navicular disease or fractures of the navicular bone or wing of the third phalanx. The procedure is relatively simple and can be performed under local or general anesthesia, but the consequences for a neurectomized horse can be disastrous. Rules of racing in many places limit or exclude participation of neurectomized horses.
