post-transcriptional RNA processing a series of enzymatic reactions that convert the primary transcript to a mature functional molecule. Processing includes: base modification, sugar modification, pyrimidine ring rearrangements, formation of helices and tertiary conformations, additions to the 5′- and 3′-termini, specific exonucleolytic and endonucleolytic cleavages, complex cleavages with splicing and the formation of RNA-protein complexes. The number, type and order of the processing events varies with the RNA species. How to thank TFD for its existence?
