Background: Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic ablation with porfimer sodium photodynamic therapy (PDT) have recently been combined to improve the accuracy of histologic staging and remove superficial carcinomas.
In the modeled scenario showing 50% recovery of unbilled drug, the greatest net margin gain of $26 was noted for J9600, porfimer sodium (Photofrin(R)) 75 mg, with an allowed drug reimbursement (for Q3'05) of $2,150.
The approved drug, porfimer sodium (Photofrin(R), Axcan Pharmaceuticals), was effective in Phase III clinical trials, but was associated with skin photosensitivity for up to 4 to 6 weeks, and strictures resulting in the need for repeated esophageal dilatation in 38% of the patients.
