mitogen

 [mi´to-jen]
a substance that induces blast transformation; DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis; and proliferation of lymphocytes; e.g., concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin, or lipopolysaccharide.

mi·to·gen

(mī'tō-jen),
A substance frequently derived from plants that stimulates mitosis and lymphocyte transformation in an antigen-nonspecific manner; includes not only lectins such as phytohemagglutinins, pokeweed mitogen, and concanavalin A, but also substances from streptococci (associated with streptolysin S) and from strains of α-toxin-producing staphylococci.
Synonym(s): transforming agent (1)
[mitosis + G. -gen, producing]

mitogen

1. Any agent that promotes cell nuclear division (MITOSIS). Mitogens are important in genetic research and technology. Pokeweed mitogen, derived from the plant Phytolacca americana , is a powerful mitogen of B LYMPHOCYTES.
2. Any substance that non-specifically causes lymphocytes to proliferate.

mitogen

a growth factor in the form of a small protein found in blood serum that often has a specific target organ in which it induces MITOSIS.

pokeweed mitogen (PWM)
a lectin from the plant, Phytolacca americana, that produces B and T lymphocyte blastogenesis.
