[graf′īt] Etymology: L, graphites, from Gk, graphis a writing instrument a form of native mineralized carbon whose dust causes a form of pneumoconiosis when it is inhaled. See also pneumoconiosis. graphite, n a soft carbon substance with a metallic black or gray sheen and a greasy feel.
