fibrinous pleurisy a type with fibrinous adhesions between the visceral and parietal pleurae, obliterating part or all of the pleural space.

purulent pleurisy empyema (2).

serous pleurisy that marked by free exudation of fluid.

Etymology: Gk, pleura + itis, inflammation; L, effundere, to pour out

pleurisy in which there is an accumulation of fluid in the intrapleural space. The fluid has a high specific gravity as a result of a high concentration of fibrin and clots.
