Etymology: ME, plaintif, one who complains
(in law) a person who files a lawsuit initiating a legal action. The plaintiff complains or sues for remedial relief and names a complainant in various civil actions. In criminal actions the prosecution is the plaintiff, acting in behalf of the people of the jurisdiction.
