neurolytic alcohol or block using hydroxybenzene (phenol), intended to anesthetize a particular nerve permanently. The technique is sometimes used to control spasticity in specific muscle groups or to block transmission of nerve impulses in chronic pain conditions such as cancers. Morbidity can be high, and pain frequently recurs.
