sialorrhea [sī·al′ərē′ə] Etymology: Gk, sialon + rhoia, flow an excessive flow of saliva that may be associated with various conditions, such as acute inflammation of the mouth, mental retardation, mercurialism, pregnancy, teething, alcoholism, or malnutrition. Also called hypersalivation, ptyalism. sialorrhea (sīal´ n (hypersalivation, ptyalism), an excessive flow of saliva.
