The period of a woman's life characterized by physiological changes associated with the end of reproductive capacity and terminating with the completion of menopause. Also called climacteric.

a span of 4 to 6 years preceding menopause when menstrual cycles and blood flow may be irregular. As estrogen levels decline, osteoporosis begins, and women are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

n the premenopausal period of approximately 3 to 6 years during which menstrual cycles become erratic and estrogen levels fall, ending with the cessation of menstruation. See also menopause.
