a beta-adrenergic blocking agent with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. It is used as an antihypertensive in the form of the sulfate salt.

penbutolol (penbū´tlôl),
n brand name: Levatol;
drug class: nonselective β-adrenergic blocker;
action: competitively blocks stimulation of β-adrenergic receptors within the heart and decreases renin activity, all of which may play a role in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure; inhibits β2 receptors in the bronchial system;
uses: hypertension alone or with thiazide diuretics.
