penbutolol /pen·bu·to·lol/ (pen-bu´tah-lol) a beta-adrenergic blocking agent with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity; used as the sulfate salt in the treatment of hypertension. penbutolol [pen-bu′tah-lol] a beta-adrenergic blocking agent with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. It is used as an antihypertensive in the form of the sulfate salt. penbutolol (penbū´t n brand name: Levatol; drug class: nonselective β-adrenergic blocker; action: competitively blocks stimulation of β-adrenergic receptors within the heart and decreases renin activity, all of which may play a role in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure; inhibits β2 receptors in the bronchial system; uses: hypertension alone or with thiazide diuretics. penbutolol Levatol® An antihypertensive β-blocker.
