Description: Dorsal rays XI,9 (female paratype
with XII,9); anal rays 111,9; first dorsal and anal soft rays unbranched, all others branched, the last to base; pectoral rays 15, the upper two un-branched; pelvic rays 1,5; principal caudal rays 13; median 11 unbranched; upper and lower procur-rent caudal rays 6, posteriormost segmented; lateral line interrupted; dorso-anterior series of pored scales 17+7 (17+6-8), scales above lateral line to base of dorsal fin 2; scales below lateral line to base of anal fin 6; median predorsal scales 5; median prepelvic scales 6; circumpeduncular scales 16; horizontal scale rows on cheek 2; gill rakers 13 (1314); branchiostegal rays 5; vertebrae 9 + 16.
The plumage of the Bolivian specimen housed at the Coleccion Boliviana de Fauna (CBF 03760, male) was compared visually to two paratypes
from Cordillera Vilcabamba sent on loan from the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH 824162, 824165; female and male, respectively) and the single specimen from Cordillera Yanachaga (LSUMZ 105658, male); digital photographs were taken for documentation.
The specimens, which Gravitis (1981) chose as holotypes or paratypes
of the four remaining new species, cannot be identified at the species level because they are fragmentary, poorly preserved, or juvenile.
Holotype, LACM 3092, paratype
LACM 3093, 1,800 m, on whale skeleton, San Clemente Seep, SW of San Diego, CA (32[degrees]12'N, 117[degrees]44'W), collected by Craig R.
Two were returned to the Bishop Museum, and one each deposited as a paratype
to the Northern Territory Museum and the Australian Museum.
Similarly, the drawing of the gill arch of the paratype
was made without dissection by viewing through an opening in the branchiostegal membrane.
