oxymetholone /oxy·meth·o·lone/ (-meth´o-lōn) an anabolic steroid used in the treatment of anemia and for the prophylaxis and treatment of hereditary angioedema.

an anabolic steroid.
indications It is prescribed in the treatment of anemias caused by antineoplastic drugs.
contraindications Cancer of the male breast or prostate, liver disease, pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are hirsutism, acne, liver toxicity, electrolyte imbalances, and, depending on the patient's age, various endocrine effects.

oxymetholone [ok″se-meth´o-lōn]
an anabolic steroid used to treat patients with anemia due to bone marrow failure or deficient red blood cell production and for prophylaxis and treatment of hereditary angioedema; administered orally.

oxymetholone (ok´sēmeth´lōn´),
n brand name: Anadrol-50;
drug class: androgenic anabolic steroid (Controlled Substance Schedule III);
action: reverses catabolic tissue processes; promotes buildup of protein, increased erythropoietin production;
uses: anemia associated with bone marrow failure and red cell production deficiencies, aplastic anemia, myelofibrosis, and anemia caused by myelotoxic drugs.

oxymetholone
a 17α-alkylated androgen used for its anabolic effects in the treatment of aplastic and other nonregenerative anemias.
