Ovulation induction with gonadotropins (FSH and luteinizing hormone [LH]), and rarely clomiphene citrate, may lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, especially if accompanied by hCG administration, in patients who are being treated for infertility.
However, even with careful monitoring, sometimes a woman receiving this treatment can develop ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, a complication in which the ovaries swell, leak fluid into the abdomen and produce too many eggs.
