A persistently expansive or elevated mood, caused by nonpsychogenic conditions evidenced by Hx, physical exam, or labs, often affecting those > age 35 Etiology CNS infections–eg, viral and cryptococcal meningitides, neurosyphilis, trauma–eg, thalamotomy, right hemispherectomy, tumors–1º or metastatic, CVA, TIA, eponymic disorders–Klinefelter syndrome and Huntington's, Kleine-Levin, Parkinson's, Pick's and Wilson's diseases, carcinoid, idiopathic cerebral calcification, hyperbaric O2, systemic disease, endocrine–eg, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism with starvation diet, puerperal and premenstrual psychoses, systemic infections–eg, Q fever, infectious mononucleosis, renal failure–eg, uremia, hemodialysis, drugs–eg, bromide, bromocriptine, cocaine, corticosteroids, H2-blocking agents, isoniazid, l-dopa, phencyclidine, procainamide, procarbazine, thyroid drugs, hypovitaminosis–eg, ↓ vitamin B12 and niacin
