orbivirus /or·bi·vi·rus/ (or´bĭ-vi″rus) any virus of the genus Orbivirus.

Orbivirus
[ôr′bivī′rəs]
Etymology: L, orbis, ring
a genus of the Reoviridae family of viruses that contains double-stranded ribonucleic acid. It is characterized by an outer layer of rings of capsomeres. Insects are hosts for orbiviruses. Colorado tick fever and African horse sickness are among infections caused by species of these viruses. Orbiviruses are primarily animal pathogens; only 7 out of 100 of these are linked to clinical human disease.

any member of a genus of RNA viruses, some of which have been found to cause disease in areas of the world such as Central Africa and Siberia. Mosquitoes, ticks, and sandflies are vectors.

Orbivirus
