[ō′əfôr′əsal′pinjek′təmē] Etymology: Gk, oophoron + salpinx, tube, ektomē, excision the surgical removal of one or both ovaries and the corresponding fallopian tubes, performed to remove a cyst or tumor, excise an abscess, or treat endometriosis. A bilateral procedure causes sterility and induces menopause, unless a malignancy is present; estrogen therapy may be started to relieve the unpleasant side effects of the abrupt onset of menopause.
