obese [ōbēs′] Etymology: L, obesus, swollen pertaining to a corpulent or excessively heavy individual. A body mass index of greater than or equal to 30.0 indicates obesity. Because the "average" human body is approximately 25% fat, the proportion may be doubled for a medically defined obese person.
