n.pr a numerical expression of the hardness of a material, determined by measuring the diameter of a dent made by forcing a hard steel or tungsten carbide ball of standard dimension into the material under specified load in a Brinell machine, which was devised by J.A. Brinell, a Swedish engineer. The larger the indentation, the smaller the Brinell hardness number. See also test, Brinell hardness.
