nostrum /nos·trum/ (nos´trum) a quack, patent, or secret remedy.
Patent Medicine A bottled mixture of herbs and plants, often in a 25% to 50% alcohol base, that was most popular from the 1870s to the 1930s, primarily in the American West; patent medicines were huckstered as cure-alls for conditions ranging from smallpox to cholera, and sold by mail or in travelling medicine shows nostrum [nos´trum] a quack, patent, or secret remedy.
