norgestrel /nor·ges·trel/ (-jes´trel) a synthetic progestational agent used as an oral contraceptive..
norgestrel [nôrjes′trəl] a progestin. indications It is prescribed alone or in combination with estrogen as a contraceptive. contraindications Thrombophlebitis, liver dysfunction, unusual vaginal bleeding, breast cancer, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. The drug should be used with caution in patients with a history of depression. adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are thrombophlebitis, embolism, depression, amenorrhea, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, breast changes, and masculinization of a female fetus. It should be discontinued immediately if vision changes, such as a complete or partial loss of vision or double vision, occur. norgestrel (nôrjes´tr n brand name: Ovrette; drug class: progesterone derivative; action: inhibits secretion of pituitary gonadotropins, which prevents follicular maturation, ovulation; use: oral contraception.
