A synthetic progestogen used in combination with estrogen as an oral contraceptive.

a progestin.
indications It is prescribed alone or in combination with estrogen as a contraceptive.
contraindications Thrombophlebitis, liver dysfunction, unusual vaginal bleeding, breast cancer, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. The drug should be used with caution in patients with a history of depression.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are thrombophlebitis, embolism, depression, amenorrhea, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, breast changes, and masculinization of a female fetus. It should be discontinued immediately if vision changes, such as a complete or partial loss of vision or double vision, occur.

a potent synthetic progestational agent used, alone or in combination with an estrogen component, as an oral contraceptive.

action: inhibits secretion of pituitary gonadotropins, which prevents follicular maturation, ovulation;
