NOG

A gene on chromosome 17q22 that encodes noggin, a protein that inhibits TGF-beta signal transduction by binding to TGF-beta family ligands, preventing them from binding to their cognate receptors. Noggin plays a key role in neural induction by inhibiting BMP4 and other TGF-beta signalling inhibitors (e.g., chordin and follistatin), and it is required for cartilage morphogenesis and joint formation.
