When a pulmonary function study is ordered by a physician, the testing in most laboratories may include spirometry with maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), testing before and after bron-chodilator if indicated; DLCO; lung volumes preferably using body plethysmography or by either nitrogen washout or helium dilution; and arterial blood gas analysis.
The "closing volume" aspect of nitrogen washout is presently given little or no attention in the pulmonary function lab.
It begins with an excellent description of the multiple breath nitrogen washout technique, the multi-breath helium dilution technique and goes on to discuss single breath techniques and body plethysmography for thoracic gas volume.
