newt
newts and salamanders belong to the subclass Urodela (syn. Caudata) and comprise eight families and a very large number of species. The newts spend some of their lives on land, in a form called efts, and then metamorphose to aquatic newts. They are small, lizard-like creatures, which are becoming popular as house pets or decorations.

newt poisoning
dogs and cats mouthing newts and salamanders may develop salivation, muscular weakness and motor incoordination leading to paralysis, vomiting and diarrhea, caused by a salivary toxin.
