Etymology: Gk, neuron, nerve, skeletos, dried up
the parts of the skeleton that surround or otherwise protect the nervous system, particularly the skull and vertebrae.

That portion of the skeleton that surrounds and protects the nervous system (i.e., the cranium and spinal column).
