neurilemma /neu·ri·lem·ma/ (noor″ĭ-lem´ah) the thin membrane spirally enwrapping the myelin layers of certain fibers, especially of the peripheral nerves, or the axons of some unmyelinated nerve fibers.

1. The delicate membranous covering that forms the myelin sheath around the axons of peripheral nerves. Also called sheath of Schwann.

Etymology: Gk, neuron + lemma, sheath
a layer of cells composed of one or more Schwann cells that forms the segmented myelin sheaths of peripheral nerve fibers. It is necessary for regeneration of peripheral nerves when they have been severed. Also spelled neurolemma. Also called Schwann sheath. neurilemmal, neurilemmatic, neurilemmatous, adj.

neurilemma [noor″ĭ-lem´ah]
the plasma membrane of a Schwann cell, forming the sheath of Schwann of a myelinated or unmyelinated peripheral nerve. adj., adj neurilem´mal.

neurilemma (nyoo´rilem´),
n the thin membranous outer covering surrounding the myelin sheath of a medullated nerve fiber or the axis cylinder of a nonmedullated nerve fiber. Neurilemma is associated with the booster mechanisms for the rapid transmission of impulses. Also called
sheath of Schwann.
