[noo͡r′əsēl] Etymology: Gk, neuron + koilos, hollow a system of cavities in the central nervous system of humans and other vertebrate animals. It consists of the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord, which originate from the neural tube during early embryonic development. Also spelled neurocele, neurocoel.
